WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL PAINTING
Using the human figure as the center of interest, this class will concentrate on the elements needed to create a successful painting. By utilizing demonstrations, individual instruction, discussion, and visual aids, I hope to help beginning to advanced students understand what makes a painting work.
Years ago an artist friend of mine, John Pitre, said that meaningful and valuable art come straight from the heart not from technical area. I’ve never forgotten that. Technical abilities are of great importance though. Good drawing and painting skills and an understanding of design and composition are vital.
Understanding the techniques of what makes a painting work can be of great value.” Class participants will paint costumed models from life. Starting with a review of the basics, including accurate drawing, value and form, light and shadow, and color. The class will progress to the principles of design and the use of these principles to create compositions and paintings that work. Throughout the session students will also be given instruction on how to photograph models and work from photographic reference. USING PHOTOS AS A GUIDE ONLY IS CRITICAL. Work will be critiqued throughout the workshop.
• Beginner to advanced
