Sometimes I think the memories of youth are better than it really was. As I conceived this painting, a flood of memories came back of the times my brother Clayne and I spent together. I tried to hold this nostalgic feeling as I worked on the painting.
We were always playing in some back alley or vacant lot behind an old building or barn. We would flip coins to decide just about anything—from figuring out what we would do that day to who would be the team captain. All major and minor decisions were decided with a flip. If there were only two of us, it would be heads or tails; if there were more than two, it would be odd man out.
